Israel seizes West Bank Hamas men

Israel has detained 10 senior Hamas leaders in the West Bank two days after indirect talks between the two sides on a possible prisoner swap collapsed.

An Israeli military spokeswomen described them as “terror operatives”; Hamas said they included four MPs, a former deputy PM and an academic.

Israeli forces and the rival West Bank Palestinian leadership have clamped down on the militant group since 2007.

That was when Hamas took sole control of Gaza, which is blockaded by Israel.

The detainees include Nasser Shaer, who served as Palestinian Authority deputy prime minister when Hamas won PA legislative elections in 2006.

He was arrested in Nablus. Three others, including an MP and a mayor were arrested in Ramallah, and another MP was taken in the Jenin area.

Correspondents say the detentions appear to be an Israeli attempt to pressure Hamas after the failure of recent efforts to win the release of captured soldier Gilad Shalit, who is being held by Hamas in Gaza. Leggi il seguito di questo post »

Israel Arrests 10 Hamas Leaders

Posted by gaetanoditommaso su 19 marzo, 2009

JERUSALEM — Israel arrested 10 Hamas leaders in the West Bank late Wednesday and early Thursday, including four legislators, in what Hamas said was an attempt to put pressure on the organization after the collapse of negotiations for the release of a captive Israeli soldier, Cpl. Gilad Shalit.

The Israeli military described the men who were detained as “leaders of the ongoing efforts to restore the administrative branch of the Hamas terror organization in the region.” A spokesman would not comment on any possible link to the Shalit affair.

Israel’s departing prime minister, Ehud Olmert, had hoped to secure Corporal Shalit’s release before leaving office. Mr. Olmert is to be succeeded by Benjamin Netanyahu, leader of the conservative Likud Party, who has until early April to form a new governing coalition.

In return for Corporal Shalit, who was seized by Hamas and other Palestinian militants in a cross-border raid and taken into Gaza in 2006, Hamas demands the release of 450 Palestinians in Israeli jails, including many convicted of deadly attacks on Israelis. But intensive talks held through Egyptian mediators ended this week without an agreement, and Mr. Olmert said Tuesday that his government would not accede to all of Hamas’s demands. Israel rejects Shalit swap terms

Posted by gaetanoditommaso su 17 marzo, 2009

BBC NEWS

17 March 2009

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has said that Hamas’s terms for swapping captured soldier Gilad Shalit for Palestinian prisoners are unacceptable.

He spoke after senior Israeli envoys returned from indirect talks with Hamas in Cairo without a deal.

One of his ministers accused Hamas of raising its demands to a level no Israeli government could accept.

Hamas played down suggestions a deal had been close and said it had not changed its conditions.

Israel accused the Palestinian militant group of hardening its position on the proposed prisoner exchange.

The talks were part of a final push by the outgoing Israeli prime minister to secure a deal before he left office.

The young soldier’s father, Noam Shalit, acknowledged he would not see his son again soon.

“This government, it seems, will not be able to bring Gilad back,” he said. Leggi il seguito di questo post »

Olmert Rejects Hamas Demands for Soldier

Posted by gaetanoditommaso su 17 marzo, 2009

JERUSALEM — The prime minister of Israel, Ehud Olmert, said Tuesday that his government would not accede to all of Hamas’s demands for the release of a captured Israeli soldier, Cpl. Gilad Shalit, dimming the prospects for an imminent deal. But he added that the efforts to secure the soldier’s freedom would not cease.

Mr. Olmert made the remarks in a televised address to the nation a day after his negotiators returned from an intensive round of talks in Cairo without an agreement for the soldier’s release, something the prime minister had been hoping to achieve before leaving office.

Corporal Shalit was seized by Hamas and other Palestinian militants in a cross-border raid and taken into Gaza in 2006.

Hamas, the Islamic group that governs Gaza, wants to exchange him for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, including many convicted of masterminding deadly attacks against Israelis and sending suicide bombers.

Mr. Olmert said that Israel had made “generous and far-reaching proposals” regarding a prisoner release, but that he was not prepared to go beyond them.

“We have red lines. We will not cross them,” he said. “We are not a defeated nation.” Leggi il seguito di questo post »

Israel envoys seek Shalit release

BBC NEWS

15 March 2009

The head of Israel’s security services is in Cairo for talks aimed at securing the release of a captured Israeli soldier, Gilad Shalit.

Sgt Shalit has been held in Gaza since being kidnapped by Palestinian Hamas militants in 2006.

Hundreds of Israelis gathered in Jerusalem on Friday calling on the government to agree a prisoner swap deal with Sgt Shalit’s captors.

The Israeli government is expected to discuss a deal on Monday.

Egypt has been mediating the discussions between Israel and Hamas.

Israel’s outgoing Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Shin Bet chief Yuval Diskin and veteran negotiator Ofer Dekel would return from Cairo on Sunday and report to the cabinet the next day.

“The government will receive the update and in accordance with the circumstances and the information, we will decide which decision should be made,” Mr Olmert said in a statement.

Interior Minister Meir Sheetrit said the talks in Cairo would decide the issue “for better or worse”. Leggi il seguito di questo post »

Olmert, in His Final Days in Office, Faces Key Choice on Captive Israeli

Posted by valecardia su 14 marzo, 2009

JERUSALEM, March 13 — It has been nearly three years since Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit was captured near the Gaza Strip in a cross-border raid by Palestinian gunmen, and the issue has dogged Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert ever since.

Two rounds of intense Israeli military action in Gaza did not free the fresh-faced conscript, now 22. Neither has Israel’s imprisonment of dozens of members of the Palestinian parliament who belong to Hamas, the armed Islamist movement that controls the strip and Shalit’s fate. Israelis rally for Shalit release

Posted by gaetanoditommaso su 13 marzo, 2009

BBC NEWS

13 March 2009

Hundreds of Israelis have gathered in Jerusalem to call for the government to step up efforts to free Gilad Shalit, a soldier captured by militants in 2006.

The protesters joined Sgt Shalit’s parents, who are staying in a tent near the house of outgoing PM Ehud Olmert.

They want their son freed as part of a prisoner swap with the Palestinians.

At one stage, crowds of protestors blocked the road leading to Olmert’s residence, chanting: “Olmert, you made a promise, Olmert, keep it.”

The Shalits say they fear a more harder-line cabinet led by Prime Minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu might be less likely to do a deal. Leggi il seguito di questo post »

Shalit campaign steps up a gear

Posted by gaetanoditommaso su 9 marzo, 2009

BBC NEWS

09 March 2009

The parents of captured soldier Gilad Shalit have spent a first full night in a tent outside the Israeli PM’s house to raise pressure on his government.

They are escalating the campaign after Ehud Olmert said demonstrations calling for Sgt Shalit’s release by Palestinian militants in Gaza were unhelpful.

Noam and Aviva Shalit are urging the outgoing PM to agree a prisoner swap.

The Shalits fear a harder line cabinet led by PM-designate Benjamin Netanyahu might be less likely to do a deal.

They couple began their protest in the early hours of Sunday.

“We will stay as long as Gilad, who has been held for nearly 1,000 days, is not freed,” Noam Shalit told Israeli army radio.

Gilad Shalit was seized in June 2006 by Palestinian militants, including members of the Hamas group which runs Gaza, in an raid into Israel that also left two Israeli soldiers dead.

Egypt has been brokering talks to secure his release. Hamas are demanding the release of more than 400 of the thousands of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

In February, the Israeli security cabinet stipulated the soldier must be released before Israel eased its comprehensive blockade of Gaza. Leggi il seguito di questo post »

As Olmert’s Time in Office Nears End, Captive Soldier’s Saga Gains Urgency

Posted by gaetanoditommaso su 9 marzo, 2009

JERUSALEM — For the family of the captive Israeli soldier Cpl. Gilad Shalit, the waning days of the Olmert government represent a time of dwindling hope and growing despair.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has as little as two weeks left in office as his probable successor tries to form a new government. By then, Corporal Shalit, who turned 22 in captivity, will have been a hostage of Hamas for about 1,000 days.

The parents and friends of Corporal Shalit are pressing Mr. Olmert to clear his desk, and his conscience, by reaching an 11th-hour deal for the soldier’s return.

“We think there is still a last chance before the prime minister ends his term,” Noam Shalit, Corporal Shalit’s father, said Sunday as he and the rest of his family began a sit-in at a protest tent near the prime minister’s residence in Jerusalem.

“With a new government we do not know what will happen,” he said. “They could do a reset and start another three-year nightmare.” Leggi il seguito di questo post »

Israël décide de lier le cas de Gilad Shalit à une trêve

Posted by alicemarziali su 19 febbraio, 2009
