Posted by alicemarziali su 2 gennaio, 2009

Palestinian Forces Dilute Hebron’s Volatile Brew

HEBRON, West Bank — It was a scene that revealed both its medieval origins and its contemporary significance. On one side of the concrete schoolyard sat the Rajabi clan, wearing their finest kaffiyeh headdresses. On the other side were the Ajnounis, similarly decked out. These ancient Hebron families had been feuding in the lawlessness of this city, leaving nine dead in recent months. Yet here they were last week, brought together by the newly installed Palestinian security forces, and being obliged to reconcile. Some 2,000 men sitting on plastic chairs looked on as a judge read the ruling — 9.5 kilograms of gold or $210,000, $70,000 now and the rest in four monthly payments to the Rajabis. Old men rose, signed their names and embraced. Wads of cash held by rubber bands were produced. The audience burst into applause. Leggi il seguito di questo post »

JERUSALEM (CNN) — Outgoing Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert opened his weekly Cabinet meeting on Sunday with sharp words for Jewish settlers who opened fire on Palestinians last week, saying their actions constituted a “pogrom.”

“We are the children of a people whose historic ethos is built on the memory of pogroms,” Olmert said. “The sight of Jews firing at innocent Palestinians has no other name than pogrom. Even when Jews do this, it is a pogrom. Leggi il seguito di questo post »

Hebron ‘secured’ after evictions

Posted by alicemarziali su 6 dicembre, 2008

Al Jazeera International

Israeli police have been heavily deployed in the West Bank town of Hebron after the court-sanctioned eviction of a group of Jewish settlers sparked violent clashes.
The scene in Hebron was calm on Friday, a day after Israeli police used tear gas and clubs to evict the settlers from a building in the town.
“It’s certainly much calmer today but there’s a real feeling of unease,” Dan Nolan, Al Jazeera’s correspondent at the scene, reported.
“There haven’t been any clashes but that’s mainly because this is such a secure zone at the moment … there’s so many of the Israeli security forces around Hebron.”
About 40 people were hurt in clashes between police, settlers and Palestinians during the eviction operation on Thursday. Leggi il seguito di questo post »
