Misery Hangs Over Gaza Despite Pledges of Help

Posted by claudiacampli su 28 maggio, 2009

GAZA — Dozens of families still live in tents amid collapsed buildings and rusting pipes. With construction materials barred, a few are building mud-brick homes. Everything but food and medicine has to be smuggled through desert tunnels from Egypt. Among the items that people seek is an addictive pain reliever used to fight depression. Four months after Israel waged a war here to stop Hamas rocket fire and two years after Hamas took full control of this coastal strip, Gaza is like an island adrift. “A Gaza furono colpiti i civili” il rapporto Onu accusa Israele

Posted by claudiacampli su 6 maggio, 2009

Israel backs down over white phosphorus

Posted by claudiacampli su 23 aprile, 2009

Sheera Frenkel in Tel Aviv

Israeli troops stopped using white phosphorus shells in Gaza this year after The Times published evidence that they were injuring civilians.

In its first explicit admission, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said that “media buzz” had forced the army to withdraw the shells from its arsenal on January 7 – the day that The Times obtained photographs of stockpiles and two days after the newspaper had exposed the effect of white phosphorus on the population of Gaza. Israeli Military Says Actions in Gaza War Did Not Violate International Law

Posted by claudiacampli su 22 aprile, 2009

Published: April 22, 2009

JERUSALEM — The Israeli military on Wednesday presented the conclusions of several internal investigations into its conduct during the war in Gaza and stated that it had operated in accordance with international law, countering widespread international criticism over its actions and continuing accusations of possible war crimes.

The military said in a statement that it had “maintained a high professional and moral level” during the 22-day war, which ended Jan. 18, though it faced “an enemy that aimed to terrorize Israeli civilians whilst taking cover” among Palestinian civilians and “using them as human shields.” Leggi il seguito di questo post »

Israel Anticipated a Stronger Hamas in Gaza War

Posted by valecardia su 4 aprile, 2009

JERUSALEM — The small house near Gaza City posed no immediate threat — there was no sniper fire or evidence it was wired with explosives. But as the Israel Defense Forces approached with plans to position soldiers on either side, Maj. Gur Rosenblat said he still regarded the structure with suspicion, and called in a bulldozer to tear it down.

There was nothing inside.

“A suspicious house between two platoons? I could not leave it,” said Rosenblat, a commander in the Israeli reserve. “We took risks to avoid civilian damage, but we tried to make the risks as low as we could. I needed to complete my mission and bring my soldiers back to their families.” Leggi il seguito di questo post »

Israeli Military Closes Probe into Gaza Misconduct

Posted by valecardia su 30 marzo, 2009

JERUSALEM, March 30 — The Israeli military’s top lawyer on Monday closed an investigation into alleged misconduct during the recent three-week war in Gaza, concluding that charges made by graduates of a military preparation school were “based on hearsay” and had been “purposely exaggerated.”

In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces said that Brig. Gen. Avichai Mandelblit concluded there was no evidence to support the most serious charges, including alleged instances where civilians were shot without cause and soldiers unnecessarily destroyed or defaced property. Israel army punishes Gaza soldier

Posted by gaetanoditommaso su 27 marzo, 2009

27 March 2009

An Israeli soldier was removed from the combat area after he shot a Gazan woman in the leg “by mistake” during the recent offensive, military sources say.

The soldiers were firing in the air and urging a group of Palestinians who looked “suspicious” at the time, the military said.

It appears to be the first officially confirmed case of disciplinary action over troops’ actions in the conflict.

The Israeli forces’ conduct has been heavily criticised.

A statement from the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said there had been a warning of a suicide attacker in the area where the incident occurred.

The soldier was an infantryman from the Givati Brigades, and has been demoted and put on probation, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported.

Correspondents say the case is a relatively minor one in comparison to some of the allegations that have been levelled at Israeli forces – that they shot at civilians carrying white flags, used heavy firepower and white phosphorous indiscriminately, and failed to allow evacuations of wounded civilians.

Several international rights experts and organisations have raised concerns that both Israeli forces and Palestinian militants may have committed war crimes during the 22-day conflict. Leggi il seguito di questo post »

Israel suspected of bombing Sudan arms convoy headed for Gaza

Posted by claudiacampli su 27 marzo, 2009

Israeli jets carried out a long-range bombing mission against a convoy in Sudan that was suspected of bringing arms from Iran to Hamas in the Gaza Strip, it emerged yesterday.

Sudan confirmed that an illegal arms convoy was destroyed by an airstrike near the Egyptian border at the height of the war in Gaza in January. It declined to identify which country had launched the attack.

Posted by alicemarziali su 26 marzo, 2009

l.e Monde

Posted by alicemarziali su 26 marzo, 2009
