Hamas chief hails Obama approach

22 March 2009

The political leader of Hamas, Khaled Meshaal, has credited US President Barack Obama with using a “new language” for the Middle East.

Speaking to an Italian newspaper Mr Meshaal also said that an official opening to his Palestinian Islamist movement was only “a matter of time”.

The interview was published three days after President Obama called for a “new beginning” in relations with Iran.

Iran and Syria, where Mr Meshaal is exiled, are key backers of Hamas.

Mr Obama’s video message to the Iranian leaders and people was seen as a major break with previous US policy.

But in response, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei demanded concrete policy changes from the US. Leggi il seguito di questo post »

Hamas: Who is in Charge?

Posted by claudiacampli su 22 febbraio, 2009

Asharq Al-Awsat

Ramallah-The Hamas movement takes its name from the acronym of ‘Harakat al Muqawama al Islamia,’ meaning the Islamic resistance movement. It defines itself as a popular and nationalist resistance movement working towards the liberation of the Palestinian people from oppression, and the liberation of Palestinian soil from occupation. The movement considers itself to be a Jihadist movement in the broader definition of the term [Jihad meaning to strive towards something], as well as part of the larger Islamic revival. Hamas considers this to be the basic approach to liberating all Palestinian territory from the river to the sea, and the movement has not changed its ideology in almost 22 years since its inception in 1987. JERUSALEM: Hamas officials said Friday that an announcement of an 18-month cease-fire with Israel was days away and would include a substantial opening of Gaza’s borders with Israel in exchange for an end to Hamas rocket attacks on southern Israeli communities. But a senior Israeli official said nothing had been agreed yet.

Meanwhile, rockets were fired into Israel on Friday, causing no damage or injuries, and Israeli warplanes struck the southern Gaza city of Khan Yunis, wounding two Popular Resistance Committee fighters. Leggi il seguito di questo post »

UN halts aid into Gaza after Hamas hijacks humanitarian convoy

Posted by claudiacampli su 7 febbraio, 2009

The United Nations today halted humanitarian supplies into Gaza after Hamas forces seized an aid convoy.

Members of the Islamist group which controls the territory took control of 10 trucks in the second such confiscation within two days.

The aid had been intended for the victims of the Israeli offensive which killed 1,300 Palestinians, left 5,000 wounded and thousands homeless.

Christopher Gunness, spokesman for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) which supports much of Gaza’s 1.5 million population, said: “The Hamas government must return all of the aid that’s been confiscated… and we have to be given by the Hamas government credible assurances that this will not happen again. TEHRAN, Feb. 2 — Hamas leader Khaled Meshal thanked Iran on Monday for many kinds of assistance but omitted any mention of the military aid that Israel and the United States have accused Iran of providing the Islamist movement that controls the Gaza Strip.

Meshal, a top political leader who lives in exile in Syria, met with Iran’s top leaders during a regional tour intended to strengthen backing for Hamas as it attempts to rebuild Gaza, which Israeli forces bombarded during a 22-day assault that ended Jan. 17.

Meshal watched hundreds of Iranian Hamas supporters gathered at Tehran University as they shook their fists and shouted slogans against Israel and the United States. They also called for the execution of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, whom they labeled a traitor for not supporting Hamas and for blocking the border between his country and the Gaza Strip during the Israeli offensive.

Posted by alicemarziali su 3 febbraio, 2009

Posted by alicemarziali su 1 febbraio, 2009

Posted by Folco Zaffalon su 31 gennaio, 2009
