Clashes hit Israel-Lebanon border

Posted by alicemarziali su 21 febbraio, 2009

Lebanese security officials say two rockets have been fired from south Lebanon towards Israel. The rockets fell short of their target, landing in empty fields inside Lebanese territory close to the border. No one has claimed responsibility for Saturday’s incident. The Israeli army confirmed that a rocket fired from southern Lebanon landed in northern Israel, injuring a woman slightly. Lebanese officials said that Israel retaliated by firing several shells in the vicinity of the Mansouri and al-Qulaila areas near Tyre, from where the rockets had been launched. Al Jazeera’s Rula Amin, monitoring developments from Beirut, said it was the third time rockets had been fired from Lebanon into Israel since the military assault on the Gaza Strip. «I responsabili devono pagare»

GAZA

‘Your sons have won the battle against Israel’

Posted by Alessandro Accorsi su 20 gennaio, 2009

Matt Bradley, Foreign Correspondent

The National-UAE

GAZA CITY // Mohammed al Sherafy, a Hamas parliamentarian, climbed onto a pile of sand to speak to a crowd gathered for the funeral for four young men yesterday. He could not have been addressing a more receptive audience.

“My message to the families of the martyrs is that your sons have won the battle against Israel,” Mr Sherafy told the residents of Beit Lahiya, one of several Gaza City neighbourhoods devastated during more than three weeks of Israeli aerial bombings and the subsequent ground invasion. “Congratulations to those who have launched rockets into Israel. As for Tzipi Livni, who said ‘I will change the situation in Gaza,’ I’m telling her: ‘You and your government will go and Hamas will remain.’”As dawn broke over Gaza City yesterday morning about 24 hours after Hamas called its ceasefire, the crack of shellfire could still be heard off the Mediterranean coast and the hum of surveillance drones was audible throughout the day. Gaza needs a unified Arab response

Posted by Alessandro Accorsi su 20 gennaio, 2009

Editorial

The National

Both Israel and Hamas have claimed victory with their respective unilaterally declared ceasefires, but it is difficult to see what they gained after 22 days of death and destruction in the Gaza Strip. Despite the assault, Hamas’s ability to launch rockets persists. As if to drive the point home, it launched 19 rockets into Israel while the Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, was announcing the ceasefire. Lieberman to Haaretz: Hamas missiles will reach Tel Aviv within a year

Posted by valentinabalzati su 20 gennaio, 2009

Ari Shavit,  Haaretz

While the war in Gaza was still raging, it was already clear to Avigdor Lieberman that it was going to turn out well. He didn’t like the slow pace, the caution or the ambiguous objectives. But it was the evening that Ehud Olmert was hosting six European heads of state in his residence that really made Lieberman lose it. The more ceremonies there are, the worse our situation is, he said, adding that the only political result of Operation Cast Lead was a ceremony. Leggi il seguito di questo post »

So, I Asked the UN Secretary General, Isn’t it Time for a War Crimes Tribunal?

Posted by valentinabalzati su 19 gennaio, 2009

Robert Fisk,  The Independent

It’s a wrap, a doddle, an Israeli ceasefire just in time for Barack Obama to have a squeaky-clean inauguration with all the world looking at the streets of Washington rather than the rubble of Gaza. Condi and Ms Livni thought their new arms-monitoring agreement – reached without a single Arab being involved – would work. Ban Ki-moon welcomed the unilateral truce. The great and the good gathered for a Sharm el-Sheikh summit. Only Hamas itself was not consulted. Which led, of course, to a few wrinkles in the plan. First, before declaring its own ceasefire, Hamas fired off more rockets at Israel, proving that Israel’s primary war aim – to stop the missiles – had failed. Then Cairo shrugged off the deal because no one was going to set up electronic surveillance equipment on Egyptian soil. And not one European leader travelling to the region suggested the survivors might be helped if Israel, the EU and the US ended the food and fuel siege of Gaza. Leggi il seguito di questo post »

Analysis: Hamas will never change. Will Egypt?

David Horovitz , THE JERUSALEM POST

It is an indication of the resilience of the smuggling network that runs under the Egypt-Gaza border that on Saturday night, at the end of the 22nd day of Operation Cast Lead, the IDF announced it had targeted more than 100 tunnels in the course of the day.

For more than three weeks now, the IDF has been trying to tackle the tunnel infrastructure from the air, and still the job has not been accomplished. Many of the smuggling routes beneath the narrow Philadelphi Corridor are evidently still usable. Leggi il seguito di questo post »
