Israeli Military Says Actions in Gaza War Did Not Violate International Law

JERUSALEM — The Israeli military on Wednesday presented the conclusions of several internal investigations into its conduct during the war in Gaza and stated that it had operated in accordance with international law, countering widespread international criticism over its actions and continuing accusations of possible war crimes.

The military said in a statement that it had “maintained a high professional and moral level” during the 22-day war, which ended Jan. 18, though it faced “an enemy that aimed to terrorize Israeli civilians whilst taking cover” among Palestinian civilians and “using them as human shields.” Leggi il seguito di questo post »

Israel Anticipated a Stronger Hamas in Gaza War

Posted by valecardia su 4 aprile, 2009

WASHINGTON POST

JERUSALEM — The small house near Gaza City posed no immediate threat — there was no sniper fire or evidence it was wired with explosives. But as the Israel Defense Forces approached with plans to position soldiers on either side, Maj. Gur Rosenblat said he still regarded the structure with suspicion, and called in a bulldozer to tear it down.

There was nothing inside.

“A suspicious house between two platoons? I could not leave it,” said Rosenblat, a commander in the Israeli reserve. “We took risks to avoid civilian damage, but we tried to make the risks as low as we could. I needed to complete my mission and bring my soldiers back to their families.” Leggi il seguito di questo post »

Posted by valecardia su 3 aprile, 2009

WASHINGTON POST

JERUSALEM, April 2 — An attacker with an ax killed a 13-year-old boy and wounded a 7-year-old boy in a Jewish settlement in the occupied West Bank on Thursday, prompting calls for tighter security as a new Israeli government took office.

The midday attack took place at the settlement of Bat Ayin, home to about 1,000 people and part of the Gush Etzion group of settlements south of Jerusalem. Leggi il seguito di questo post »

Israeli Military Closes Probe into Gaza Misconduct

Posted by valecardia su 30 marzo, 2009

WASHINGTON POST

JERUSALEM, March 30 — The Israeli military’s top lawyer on Monday closed an investigation into alleged misconduct during the recent three-week war in Gaza, concluding that charges made by graduates of a military preparation school were “based on hearsay” and had been “purposely exaggerated.”

In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces said that Brig. Gen. Avichai Mandelblit concluded there was no evidence to support the most serious charges, including alleged instances where civilians were shot without cause and soldiers unnecessarily destroyed or defaced property. Israel army punishes Gaza soldier

Posted by gaetanoditommaso su 27 marzo, 2009

BBC NEWS

27 March 2009

An Israeli soldier was removed from the combat area after he shot a Gazan woman in the leg “by mistake” during the recent offensive, military sources say.

The soldiers were firing in the air and urging a group of Palestinians who looked “suspicious” at the time, the military said.

It appears to be the first officially confirmed case of disciplinary action over troops’ actions in the conflict.

The Israeli forces’ conduct has been heavily criticised.

A statement from the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said there had been a warning of a suicide attacker in the area where the incident occurred.

The soldier was an infantryman from the Givati Brigades, and has been demoted and put on probation, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported.

Correspondents say the case is a relatively minor one in comparison to some of the allegations that have been levelled at Israeli forces – that they shot at civilians carrying white flags, used heavy firepower and white phosphorous indiscriminately, and failed to allow evacuations of wounded civilians.

Several international rights experts and organisations have raised concerns that both Israeli forces and Palestinian militants may have committed war crimes during the 22-day conflict. Leggi il seguito di questo post »

Israel disputes Gaza death rates

Posted by gaetanoditommaso su 26 marzo, 2009

BBC NEWS

26 March 2009

Israel says its calculation of the death toll from its assault on Gaza shows a much lower ratio of civilian deaths than other published figures.

Military researchers say 1,166 Palestinians were killed of whom 709 are described as “terror operatives” from the militant group Hamas.

The military adds it took “extensive measures” not to harm civilians.

New Palestinian research says the toll was 1,434, including 960 civilians, 235 fighters and 239 uniformed police.

Israel has been widely criticised for its operations in Gaza between 27 December and 18 January, especially over the high level of civilian casualties and the use of some weaponry in civilian areas.

In two reports published this week, UN human rights investigators said there was evidence of Israeli war crimes during the offensive, although Israel dismissed this.

Official Palestinian figures have put the final death toll at 1,475, including 943 civilians, including Palestinians who have died from their wounds in hospital. Leggi il seguito di questo post »

Israel army ‘used human shields’

Posted by gaetanoditommaso su 24 marzo, 2009

BBC NEWS

24 March 2009

United Nations investigators have accused the Israeli army of using an 11-year-old boy as a human shield during its recent Gaza offensive.

Their report says troops ordered the boy to walk in front of them for several hours under fire, entering buildings and opening suspect packages.

The UN team responsible for protection of children in war zones says it found “hundreds” of similar violations.

Israel has denied the charges, saying morals are “paramount” in its army.

Israel’s ambassador to the UN criticised the report as “unable or perhaps unwilling” to address attacks against its civilians by Palestinian militants.

The lead investigator, Sri Lankan lawyer Radhika Coomaraswamy, said the incident with the boy in the Gaza neighbourhood of Tel al-Hawa on 15 January was a violation of Israeli and international law. Leggi il seguito di questo post »

Racconti shock dei soldati israeliani “Così a Gaza abbiamo ucciso civili”

Posted by gaetanoditommaso su 20 marzo, 2009

Repubblica

20 March 2009
